Asking and Giving Suggestion

Speaking First Grade Junior High School.

In our daily lives (our daily activity). We may face many problems or problems and that might also happen to others. From some of these problems maybe we can solve the problem ourselves or need the help of others, and vice versa maybe we are helping other people's problems. As for the form of the variant help; some give assistance in the form of material or maybe only in the form of advice (Suggestion). On this occasion we will discuss this (Asking and Giving Suggestion). The things that can be learned include; Definition, Kinds of expressions, and Example.

A. Definition Asking Giving Suggestion
Asking and Giving Suggestion are English expressions used to express how to ask and advise others.

B. Kinds Expressions (Forms of Expressions)
In this section given and explained some expressions that can be used to express how to ask and advise others;

1. Asking Suggestion

  •  What should I do? 
  • Do you have any ideas? 
  • Do you have any suggestions for me? 
  • Can you tell me what I should do? 
  • Do you have any advice for me?
  • Will you give me some suggestion, please? 
  • Any idea? 
  • Can you give me some advice about ...?

2. Giving Suggestion (Giving Suggestions)

  • You should ...

  • You ought to ...
  • I think you should ...

Besides some of the expressions of Asking and Giving Suggestion above, below there are also responses (responses) that are often used in English lessons. The response examples below can be used if someone gives a suggestion, there is a possibility that the person rejects or accepts suggestions (agree / disagree);

Expressions agree with suggestions given
• I agree with you.
• I think you're right.
• I think so. (I agree)
• That's a good idea.
• That's right.
• Thanks. I'm not your advice. (Thank you. I will try your advice)
• That sounds great. (sounds like a good idea)

Disagreeing (the expression is not / less agree with the advice given)
• No, I don't think so. (No, I disagree about that)
• I disagree with you. (I doesn't agree with you)
• That's not a good idea. (That's not a good idea)
• I understand your point, but I think ... (I understand your opinion, but in my opinion ...)


C. Short dialogue about Asking and Giving Suggestion

Dialogue 1

Ulfa : Hi Sari ...?
Sari: Hi Ulfa...
Ulfa: Why you look sad?
Sari: I am confused
Ulfa: Why confused? Do you have a problem?
Sari: I have been able to pay the school administration. Do you have any advice to me?
Ulfa: I think, you should ask dispensation to the school
Ulfa: it's a good idea. Thanks Sari...
Sari: you're welcome.


Dialogue 2

Father: Hi Nerly, How are you today?
Nerly: I feel disappointed, Dad.
Father: What's wrong with you?
Nerly: I got a bad mark English examination yesterday.
Father: Don't be sad. I'm sure you can get a mark better next time and you should study hard.
Nerly: Thank you for your suggestion, Dad.
Father: It's OK. Don't mention it
